When to use this
- You have a pattern in stitches and want to know how big the finished piece will be.
- You want to switch from 14 count to 18 count Aida, or to linen, and see the new size.
- You need to know how much fabric to buy including room for framing.
How to use
- Type the pattern width and height in stitches.
- Type the fabric count and choose whether you stitch over one block or over two threads.
- Set the margin you want on each side and whether to round the cut size up.
- Press Work out the fabric size, then read the table of other counts.
Examples
- 140 x 112 stitches on 14 count Aida: 14 stitches per inch gives 140 / 14 = 10 in by 112 / 14 = 8 in. With a 3 in margin on every side the fabric is 16 in by 14 in.
- The same pattern on 28 count linen over two: Over two threads, 28 count gives 14 stitches per inch, so the finished size is the same 10 x 8 in.
Understanding the result
Stitches per inch is the fabric count for Aida, or half the count for linen and evenweave stitched over two threads. The finished design is the stitches divided by stitches per inch. The fabric size adds the margin on both sides. The cut size can be rounded up to the next half inch or whole centimetre.
Limitations
- The tool does not know your pattern's backstitch, borders or the space between motifs. Count those stitches in the width and height you type.
- Stretching in a hoop or frame can change the final measurements slightly.
- Check the count on your fabric label. Evenweave and linen labels sometimes state the count per two threads.
FAQ
How do I work out cross stitch fabric size?
Divide the stitches by the fabric count to get inches, then add the margin on both sides. For 140 stitches on 14 count that is 10 inches plus the margin.
How do I convert between Aida counts?
Keep the pattern's stitch count and divide by the new count. A pattern 140 stitches wide is 10 in on 14 count and 7.8 in on 18 count.
What if I stitch on linen over two threads?
Choose over two threads. The tool halves the count, so 28 count linen over two behaves like 14 count Aida.
How big should the margin be?
Many stitchers leave about 3 inches on each side for framing or a hoop. Choose what suits your frame or finishing.
