Wallpaper Calculator: How Many Rolls, with a Strip-by-Strip Plan
Enter your walls, doors and windows and the roll size and pattern repeat. Get the rolls to buy, every strip drawn on each wall, and a cut plan for each roll. Feet or metres. Runs in your browser.
When to use this
- You are ordering wallpaper and worry about running short or over-buying.
- Your paper has a pattern repeat or a half-drop match and you want it counted properly.
- You want to see which strip goes where and how each roll is cut.
How to use
- Choose feet or metres. Add each wall you will paper with its width and height.
- Add doors and windows with their size and position, measured from the left end of the wall and from the floor.
- Pick the roll size, then type the pattern repeat and match from the roll label.
- Press Calculate rolls. Check the wall plan and the cut plan for each roll.
- Copy the buy list or the link to this plan. Order all rolls from the same batch.

Examples
- 12 x 10 ft room, 8 ft ceilings, door and window, 24 in repeat: Each full-height strip needs 120 in once the repeat is counted, so three strips fit on a 33 ft double roll. The plan needs 9 rolls, where an area-only calculator says 7.
- Plain paper with no repeat: Set the repeat to 0. Strips are cut to wall height plus trim and more strips fit on each roll.
Understanding the result
The tool covers each wall with whole strips, cuts each strip to the visible height plus trim, rounds up to the pattern repeat, and then packs the strips onto rolls. The rolls to buy are the rolls in that plan plus spare rolls. The area rule of thumb is shown only for comparison. It usually gives fewer rolls because it ignores whole strips and pattern repeat.
Limitations
- Pattern continuity around corners is not planned. Real jobs may need extra paper where a pattern must match across a corner.
- Sloped ceilings, chimney breasts, arches and wall niches are not modelled. Add them as extra walls or add spare rolls.
- Overlap seams, wide-width non-woven paper and murals are not modelled. Use the roll width on the label.
- Different dye lots can differ in colour. Buy all rolls together.
FAQ
How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
Divide each wall width by the roll width and round up to get the strips, cut each strip to wall height plus trim and pattern repeat, and fit the strips onto rolls. This tool does that and draws it, then adds spare rolls.
What is a pattern repeat and why does it matter?
The repeat is the distance before the pattern starts again. Every strip must start at the same point of the pattern, so each strip is cut to a whole number of repeats. A large repeat wastes more paper.
What is a half drop match?
On a half-drop pattern every second strip is lowered by half a repeat. That needs extra length on those strips, and the tool adds it.
Do I subtract doors and windows?
Only strips that sit fully over a door or window can be shortened. Strips that are partly over an opening still run full height, so subtracting the opening area can leave you short.
How many spare rolls should I buy?
One spare roll, or about 10 percent, is a common choice, so you can fix mistakes and keep the same batch. You can change the percentage.
Is my room data saved anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. The share link stores your numbers after the # sign, which is not sent to a server.
