When to use this
- A recipe lists cups and you want to weigh the ingredients on a kitchen scale.
- A recipe lists grams and you only have measuring cups.
- You need the weight of a cup of flour, sugar, butter or another common ingredient and a plain cups-to-grams chart is not enough.
How to use
- Choose the direction: cups to grams, or grams to cups.
- Pick the ingredient. If it is not listed, choose Other and type grams per US cup from the package.
- Enter the amount and its unit. Choose a US cup or a 250 ml metric cup.
- Press Convert and read the grams, the ounces and the quick table.
- Copy the result, copy the link, or print the page.
Examples
- 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour: 1.5 cups at about 120 g per cup is about 180 g, or 6.35 oz.
- 2 tablespoons of butter: One US cup of butter is about 227 g, and a tablespoon is 1/16 of a cup, so 2 tablespoons is about 28 g.
- 250 g of granulated sugar: At about 200 g per cup that is 1 1/4 US cups, or 20 tablespoons.
Understanding the result
The tool turns your amount into millilitres, then multiplies by the weight of one millilitre of the ingredient, taken from a table of approximate grams per US cup. Going the other way it divides grams by that weight. Results are approximate: how you scoop, sift or pack changes the weight of a cup, and brands differ. If a package gives a weight, use the package.
Limitations
- Values are approximate and are not a substitute for the weight on a package label. Brands, humidity and how you scoop all change the weight of a cup.
- Only the ingredients in the list are included. Use the Other option for anything else, with a density from your package.
- Cooked, chopped, melted or sifted forms can weigh differently from the form listed.
- The tool converts amounts only. It does not adjust a recipe or give advice on what to cook.
FAQ
How many grams are in a cup of flour?
About 120 g for a US cup of all-purpose flour that is spooned in and levelled. Scooping straight from the bag can give more. Treat it as an approximation.
Why is a cup of sugar heavier than a cup of flour?
Sugar crystals pack more tightly than flour, so the same volume weighs more. That is why one cup needs a different number of grams for each ingredient.
Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?
No. A US cup is 236.6 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml. Pick the one your recipe uses.
Can I convert grams back to cups?
Yes. Choose grams to cups, enter the weight, and the tool shows cups, tablespoons and millilitres.
Which result should I trust, this tool or my package?
The package. Brands and mixes vary, so the weight printed on the label is better than any general table.
Is my data saved anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. The share link stores your entries after the # sign, which is not sent to a server.
