When to use this
- A recipe serves 4 and you are cooking for 6, or you want half of it.
- You want 1 1/2 times 3 tablespoons written as a measure you can actually use, not 4.5.
- You want the scaled list in millilitres and grams for a scale or a metric kitchen.
How to use
- Enter how many servings the recipe makes and how many you want.
- Paste the ingredients, one per line, with the amount first, such as 2 cups flour.
- Choose whether to keep cups, spoons and ounces or convert to ml and grams.
- Press Scale recipe and read the table. Lines marked Check need a decision from you.
- Copy the scaled list, download a CSV, or print the page.
Examples
- 4 servings to 6, factor 1.5: 2 cups flour becomes 3 cups, 1 1/2 tsp salt becomes 2 1/4 tsp, 3 tbsp butter becomes 4 1/2 tbsp, 1/2 cup sugar becomes 3/4 cup and 2 eggs become 3.
- 6 servings to 2, factor 1/3: 1 cup milk becomes 1/3 cup, and 3 tsp of vanilla becomes 1 tsp.
Understanding the result
Each amount at the start of a line is multiplied by the new servings divided by the old servings. Teaspoons, tablespoons and cups are rewritten in the largest unit that keeps the amount within 4 percent of the exact figure, then rounded to a fraction you can measure. Whole items such as eggs are rounded to the nearest half and flagged. Words after the amount are copied as written.
Limitations
- Seasonings, salt, leavening, pan size and cooking time often do not scale in a straight line. The tool does not adjust them. Check the recipe.
- Only the amount at the start of a line is changed. Amounts in brackets, such as (14 oz) can, and amounts inside the text are not scaled.
- Lines without an amount are left as written, and so are instructions and temperatures.
- Cups are treated as US cups unless you convert to metric. The tool does not guess which kind of cup a recipe meant.
FAQ
How do I scale a recipe up or down?
Divide the number of servings you want by the number the recipe makes, and multiply every ingredient by the result. This tool does it for each line and rewrites the amounts as measures you can use.
What do I do with half an egg?
The tool rounds whole items to the nearest half and marks the line. Many cooks beat an egg and use part of it by weight or volume, or round to a whole egg. Decide what suits your recipe.
Should I scale salt, spices and baking powder the same way?
Not always. They often do not scale in a straight line, especially for big changes. Treat the scaled amount as a starting point and check the original recipe.
Can I paste amounts like 1 1/2 or 1½?
Yes. Whole numbers, decimals, fractions such as 1/2, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2, the half and quarter symbols, and ranges such as 2-3 are all read.
Why is my 4 tablespoons now 1/4 cup?
The tool uses the larger unit when it is exact or very close, so 4 tablespoons and 1/4 cup are the same amount. Convert to ml and grams if you would rather weigh it.
Is my recipe saved anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
