Split Bill With Tip Calculator: Itemised Shares With Tax and Tip

Split a restaurant bill by item. Add what each person ordered, share dishes equally, and spread tax and tip in proportion. Copy a message to send the group.

What each person ordered

For example "Alice, 12.50". Write a name on several lines to add them up. Up to 30 people.

Tax and tip

When to use this

  • Everyone ordered different amounts, so an even split would be unfair.
  • Some dishes were shared and should be split equally, while the rest are paid by whoever ordered them.
  • You want tax and tip spread by what each person ordered, and a short text to send the group.

How to use

  1. Type one line for each item, with the name first and the amount after, for example Alice, 12.50. A name on several lines is added up.
  2. Enter the total of any shared dishes. These are split equally between everyone listed.
  3. Enter the tax and tip percentages and choose whether the tip is worked out before or after tax.
  4. Press Split the bill, then use Copy result to share to paste the amounts into a chat.

Examples

Understanding the result

Each person's food is their own items plus an equal share of the shared dishes. Tax is the tax percentage of the whole food total, and the tip is the tip percentage of the food total (or of food plus tax if you choose that). Both are shared out in proportion to each person's food. Amounts are kept in whole cents, and spare cents go to the largest remainders so the shares add up to the bill.

Limitations

FAQ

How do I split a restaurant bill fairly?

Add up what each person ordered, split shared dishes equally, then spread tax and tip in proportion to each person's total. This tool does all three steps.

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Customs differ. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total. The tool lets you choose, and the difference is usually small.

How do I split shared appetizers?

Enter their total in the shared dishes box. It is divided equally between everyone listed, so each person's own share is the same.

What if the shares do not divide into whole cents?

The tool works in whole cents and gives the spare cents to the largest remainders, so the shares always add up to the bill.

Is my information saved anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. The share link keeps your entries after the # sign, so names in the link are only in the link you share.
