When to use this
- You are planning a drive and want to know how much fuel will cost, and what each passenger should chip in.
- Your car gives mpg but the map shows kilometres, or the other way round.
- Two cars are driving together, or you want to add tolls and parking to the fuel bill.
How to use
- Pick the units you use for distance, fuel efficiency and fuel price. They can be mixed, for example miles with L/100 km.
- Enter the distance one way, choose round trip or one way, and enter your car's efficiency.
- Type the fuel price you expect to pay. The tool never looks up live prices.
- Enter how many people share the cost and how many vehicles drive, then add tolls and parking if any.
- Press Calculate trip cost, then copy the result or the link.
Examples
- 250 miles each way at 30 mpg: A 500 mile round trip uses about 16.7 US gallons. At 3.50 per gallon the fuel is about 58.33. Add 20 of tolls to get 78.33, or about 19.58 each for four people.
Understanding the result
The tool turns your distance into kilometres, your efficiency into litres per 100 km and your price into a price per litre. Fuel = distance x litres per 100 km / 100, times the number of vehicles. The cost is fuel times price, plus tolls and other costs. The total is divided equally by the number of people.
Limitations
- An estimate, not a quote. Fuel use varies from your car's rated figure.
- Every vehicle is assumed to have the same efficiency.
- Electric vehicles, trailers and fuel stops that change price along the way are not modelled.
- The mpg figure is US mpg (3.785 litres per gallon). UK imperial mpg is a different, larger gallon, so use L/100 km for it.
FAQ
How do I work out the fuel cost of a road trip?
Divide the trip distance by your miles per gallon to get the gallons used, then multiply by the price per gallon. This tool does the sum and converts if your numbers are in kilometres or litres.
How do I convert mpg to L per 100 km?
Divide 235.2 by the US mpg figure. 30 mpg is about 7.8 L/100 km. The tool shows the converted figure in the breakdown.
Should the driver pay a share of the gas?
That is for your group to decide. The tool splits equally, so adjust the number of people if the driver pays nothing.
Where do I find a fuel price?
Use the price on a recent receipt or a local fuel price app, then type it in. The tool does not look prices up so nothing leaves your browser.
Is my information saved anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. The share link keeps your numbers after the # sign.
