When to use this
- You have start times, end times and breaks for a week and want the total hours.
- You need hours as h:mm and as decimal hours for a pay form or an invoice.
- You want to see how many hours fall over a weekly limit you choose.
How to use
- For each day you worked, type the start time, the end time and the unpaid break in minutes.
- Leave days you did not work blank.
- Check the weekly limit. It starts at 40 hours. Change it to the number your own rules use.
- Press Add up my hours. Read the total, the split and the day-by-day table.
Examples
- Four long days and a short Friday: Monday to Thursday 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30 minute break is 8 hours each. Friday 9:00 to 17:00 with 30 minutes off is 7.5 hours. Total 39.5 hours, nothing over 40.
- A night shift: 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30 minute break counts as 7.5 hours, because an end time earlier than the start time is read as the next morning.
Understanding the result
Each day is end minus start, plus 24 hours when the end is earlier than the start, minus the break. The week is the sum of the days. Hours over your limit are the total minus the limit, never below zero. Decimal hours are minutes divided by 60 and rounded to two places, so 7:45 is 7.75.
Limitations
- This adds up the times you type. It is not payroll advice and does not apply daily overtime, double time, rounding rules, holidays or time zones.
- Clock changes for daylight saving time are not handled. A shift across the change may be an hour off.
- Only one week at a time, Monday to Sunday. For a longer period add the weekly totals yourself.
- Check your own records or your employer's rules before you use the result for pay.
FAQ
How do I add up hours and minutes on a timesheet?
Subtract the start time from the end time for each day, take off the unpaid break, then add the days. This tool does that and shows the answer as h:mm and as decimal hours.
How do I turn 7:45 hours into decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 decimal hours. The results table shows both.
How are night shifts that pass midnight counted?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool counts the end as the next day. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours before the break.
What does the weekly limit do?
It splits your total into the hours up to the limit and the hours above it. It starts at 40, but overtime rules differ by country and employer, so type your own number.
Are my times sent anywhere?
No. The sums run in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or sent to a server, and the tool does not put your times in the page address.
