When to use this
- You want the BPM of a song you are listening to, for a DJ mix, a workout or a dance.
- You need the tempo of a click track or a rhythm you are playing.
- You want half time or double time values to match a tempo setting in your app.
How to use
- Start the music.
- Tap the big button on every beat. You can also press space or Enter while the button is selected.
- Read the BPM after the second tap. It gets steadier as you tap more.
- Press Reset to start again, or just pause for 2.5 seconds.
Examples
- Four taps exactly half a second apart: The gaps are 500 ms, so the average gap is 500 ms and BPM = 60,000 / 500 = 120.
- Tapped on every second beat: If you measure 70 BPM but the song feels twice as fast, the double time value of 140 BPM is the likely tempo.
Understanding the result
BPM is 60,000 divided by the average number of milliseconds between taps. The average uses your last 16 taps: (time of last tap - time of first tap) divided by the number of gaps. A pause of more than 2.5 seconds starts a new count. The steadiness figure is how far your most uneven gap is from the average, in percent.
Limitations
- Human tapping and phone or browser timing are not exact. Expect a few percent of error, and tap for 8 to 16 beats before you trust the number.
- The tool does not listen to audio. It only measures your taps, so it cannot detect a tempo that changes by itself.
- Songs with a swing or a varying tempo give a different BPM on every try.
FAQ
How do I find the BPM of a song?
Play the song, tap the button on every beat for 8 to 16 beats and read the BPM. Tapping on the strong beat (the kick drum) works best.
Is the BPM always a whole number?
No. The tool shows one decimal, such as 127.4. Most songs are made at a whole BPM, so a value close to a whole number is usually that number.
Why do half time and double time matter?
It is easy to tap twice as fast or twice as slow as the pulse you meant. Half and double show the other readings so you can choose the one that fits.
Does the tool listen to my microphone?
No. It only times your taps. It does not use the microphone and nothing is recorded.
Why did my count restart?
A pause longer than 2.5 seconds between taps starts a new count, so an old, slower tap does not spoil the average.
